Fast Facts

  • The University of Connecticut is the state's flagship institution of higher learning.
  • The University was founded in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School and became the University of Connecticut in 1939. Additional information about the University's history and its traditions can be found on The UConn Story website.
  • The University has ten schools and colleges at its main campus in Storrs, separate Schools of Law and Social Work in Hartford, five regional campuses throughout the state and Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine at the UConn Health Center in Farmington. Student Quality

  • Incoming freshmen at Storrs in fall 2008 had average SAT scores of 1200.
  • UConn’s 2007 to 2008 freshman retention rate at Storrs is 93% and ranks us among the top 20 public universities in the nation.
  • 39% of freshmen entering the Storrs campus in fall 2008 were ranked in the top 10% of their high school class.
  • More than 20% of the incoming fall 2008 class belongs to minority groups, with freshman minority enrollment at Storrs up more than 100% since fall 1995.
  • In fall 2008, 355 freshmen accepted UConn’s invitation to join its prestigious Honors Program. On average, these students had SAT scores of 1390.
  • UConn’s fall 2008 entering class included 131 valedictorians and salutatorians at Storrs. Since 1995, UConn has recruited 1,074 valedictorians and salutatorians at all campuses.

 

Distinguished Accomplishments

  • For 10 years running, UConn has been rated by U.S. News & World Report as the No. 1 public university in New England – and today also ranks among the top 30 public universities in the nation.
  • In 2008, more than 45,000 prospective students and their families took the student-guided Lodewick Visitors Center tour of the UConn campus in Storrs – a number that’s more than tripled since 1995.
  • Kiplinger’s Personal Finance ranks UConn among the top 40 best values in public colleges. Kiplinger’s bases its rankings “on a combination of outstanding academic quality plus an affordable price tag.”
  • The University’s Annual Fund raised a record $5.76 million for the fiscal year 2008.
  • At the close of fiscal year 2008, the University’s endowment was valued at approximately $317 million, having grown nearly 51% over the past five years.
  • Research awards to UConn faculty in fiscal year 2008 exceeded $194 million, an increase of more than $84 million since 1999.

  • 56 UConn Health Center physicians were named in the 2008 Best Doctors list published by Hartford Magazine in September 2008.

  • BusinessWeek ranks UConn’s School of Business M.B.A. program in the top 45 national programs, putting it in the top 20 among public institutions.

  • The American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education ranks the Neag School of Education’s doctoral program in kinesiology No. 1 in the nation.

  • 94% of UConn’s School of Law graduates are employed within nine months of graduation.
